Straight Vegetable Oil

Biofuel or Biodiesel?

Can we pour the straight vegetable oil into our vehicle oil tank?

Is it possible that our vehicles run with 100% vegetable oil. How about the flash point,

viscosity and all the technical aspects?

Read through this article.

As I explain in the previous article, biofuel and biodiesel should be distinguish as twi different entities.

Biofuel can be defined as the vegetable oil either it is from straight vegetable oil or waste vegetable oil

Meanwhile biodiesel is a mix of biofuel and diesel.

In Europe the rate is 20% rapeseed oil 80% diesel. In Malaysia,

current research result in Envo5 which combine a 5% palm oil and 95% diesel.

Let us see the comparison of biodiesel, biofuel and the diesel´s price. (Malaysia)

Price of three type 0f Biofuels

Product

Price / liter

Oil palm

1,54 RM

Soy oil

1,71 RM

Rape seed

0,85 Euro

These are the main Biofuels used worldwide.

In Malaysia diesel and petrol have been subsidized by the government.

That is why the price of diesel in Malaysia is quite cheaper than Biofuels.

But as long as the authorities start to realize that Biofuels can contribute

something to the country growth in economy as well as securing a healthy environment,

I am very sure that biofuels will take over the role of diesel.

It is a vital for Biodiesel manufacturer to follow the international standard issue by certified organistaions. For Biodiesel, there are two common international standards. The most reliable standard is issued by the European Commitee for Standardization (Europäische Kommitee für Normung) CEN namely EN 14214. The standard apply only to Biodiesel, which is which distinguished from the straight vegetable oils (SVO) or waste vegetable oils (WVO) used as fuels in some modified diesel vehicles.

What is the different between biofuel and biodiesel? Both sound similar, but the reality is not. Many people thought that biofuel is the biodiesel itself.

As biofuel is the fuel which directly derived from biomass, biodiesel needs a special process to transform its source from the biomass to a fuel.
